Tempo provide status update on Sykes, Rice injuries

The Toronto Tempo have provided an injury update on two of their most important players.

Kiki Rice, who has been out since June 3 with an ankle injury, has a Grade 3 ankle sprain; and Brittney Sykes, who sustained a non-contact injury in the Tempo’s loss to the Fever on Tuesday, has a plantar fascia injury, the team announced Friday.

Both players will be reevaluated in the coming weeks and are expected to recover fully and return in 2026, the Tempo added.

Rice, 22, is averaging 12.7 points, 4.7 rebounds, 2.6 assists and a steal over her first 10 WNBA games, and started her last seven before being sidelined.

The rookie appeared to suffer the injury on a drive to the hoop with less than two minutes left in the fourth quarter of a 97-82 loss against the New York Liberty.

Rice landed awkwardly after her shot was blocked by Jonquel Jones. She immediately grabbed her leg while on the court in pain.

Rice then hobbled off the court and went to the locker room.

Meanwhile, Sykes, better known as “Slim,” is averaging 20.1 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 3.5 assists through 15 games. She ranks fifth in the league in scoring.

The 32-year-old fell while attempting to cut to the basket in the third quarter and did appear to put weight on both legs while being assisted off the court.

Tempo big Nyara Sabally is listed as questionable for the team’s game on Friday against the Connecticut Sun after missing the previous three games with a right hamstring injury.

If Sabally is unable to go, the Tempo will only have nine players available for the contest, barring any last-second roster moves.
