Jose Berrios’ 2026 campaign is looking murkier by the day.
Berrios has yet to pitch for the Jays this season due to a nagging elbow issue.
After four minor-league rehab starts, the right-hander seemed to be nearing his season debut, but began to face elbow inflammation. Berrios last started for the Buffalo Bisons on May 3 but struggled, pitching just 3.2 innings and allowing seven runs, including a grand slam.
On Tuesday, Berrios had a meeting with Dr. Keith Meister, one of the top elbow surgery doctors, and discussions are continuing over the next steps.
Last season he made 31 appearances, recording a 4.17 ERA with 138 strikeouts, but was left off the post-season roster as he struggled during the second half of the season and was placed on the injured list before the playoffs began.
In other Blue Jays news, with the team in Detroit to start a three-game series against the Tigers, Schneider said his starter on Saturday is still to be determined, but Spencer Miles figures to be part of the plan, according to Sportsnet’s Ben Nicholson-Smith.
Alejandro Kirk, out since April 3, is also progressing well. Schneider said he’s throwing and hitting again, and the all-star catcher’s injured thumb is “responding well” as he looks to return to catching pitches again.
Schneider also mentioned that Addison Barger is “doing beter” and will hopefully return to hitting and throwing next week, Max Scherzer is back to throwing again and Yimi Garcia is slated to throw a bullpen on Tuesday.
