Report: Jets to interview Mike Vrabel for coaching job

One of the biggest names on the coaching market will interview with the New York Jets on Friday.

The Athletic‘s Zack Rosenblatt reports that the Jets will sit down with Mike Vrabel to discuss their opening.

Vrabel was fired as coach of the Tennessee Titans after the 2023 season. He coached the Titans for six years, going to the playoffs three times with Ryan Tannehill and Marcus Mariota at quarterback

After Vrabel did not land a head-coaching job last off-season, he took a coaching consultant gig with the Cleveland Browns. The contract expired prior to the final week of the season, allowing Vrabel to get a head start on interviews.

The Jets (4-12) are set to miss the playoffs for an NFL-high 14th year in a row. The team fired coach Robert Saleh and GM Joe Douglas earlier this season. Jeff Ulbrich currently is serving as interim coach.

The Athletic reported on off-field dysfunction for the franchise earlier this season, including one reported instance of owner Woody Johnson turning down a trade because he didn’t like a player’s ranking in the Madden video game.

There have been stories of discontent between Johnson and star quarterback Aaron Rodgers, 41, who has had a miserable season. The quarterback has said he is uncertain about his playing future.

The Jets also interviewed former Washington and Carolina coach Ron Rivera earlier this week.

Vrabel also has been mentioned as a strong candidate for the New England Patriots if the NFL’s last-place team fires Jerod Mayo after one season. Vrabel is a former star linebacker for the Patriots.
