Sky’s Angel Reese sets WNBA single-season rebound record

It’s been a historic season for rookies in the WNBA and Angel Reese may have just put it over the top.

The Chicago Sky rookie star set a new single-season mark for rebounds on Sunday against the Minnesota Lynx, grabbing her 405th board this year to shatter Sylvia Fowles’s record from 2018.

Reese, 22, has already set a number of records this season, demolishing rookie marks for cleaning the glass and double-doubles. She’s also the only WNBA player to grab 20 or more rebounds in three straight games.

The former LSU standout set the record in perhaps the most opportune game, as her Chicago Sky took on the Lynx. Fowles played for both teams over the course of her storied 15-year WNBA career.

Before even entering the WNBA, the former MVP knew Reese would be the player to carry her torch, dubbing her “MIss Double-Double Queen” while Reese was still with LSU.

As of now, Reese holds the record for most consecutive double-doubles (15) and the most rookie double-doubles (23). The record for most double-doubles in a season is 28, set by Connecticut Sun superstar Alyssa Thomas in the 2023 season.

Including Sunday’s game against the Lynx, Reese has nine more outings this season to break the record. She’s well on pace to do so, as the seventh-overall selection is averaging a double-double this season, with 13.2 points and 12.9 rebounds per game. She’s also likely to be only the second rookie to average a double-double, joining Tina Charles in 2010.
