Quarterback Nick Foles, who guided the Philadelphia Eagles to their first Super Bowl title and was named the game’s MVP, will retire with the franchise during their home opener on Sept. 16 against the Atlanta Falcons.
Foles, 35, made the announcement Thursday on social media.
“I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to retire as a Philadelphia Eagle,” Foles added in a team release. “The City of Brotherly Love has always felt like home to me as an NFL player. Philadelphia is a city I truly love, and it has been an honour to wear the Eagles jersey. Thank you, Philadelphia, for embracing me and making me a part of your family forever. Your love and support have meant the world.”
Foles was drafted by the Eagles in the third round, 88th overall, in 2012. He played three seasons with Philadelphia before he was traded to the St. Louis Rams in March 2015 for fellow quarterback Sam Bradford and a fifth-round pick.
He played just one season in St. Louis and was granted his release after the team selected Jared Goff first overall in the 2015 draft. After one season with the Kansas City Chiefs, Foles re-joined the Eagles as the backup to Carson Wentz.
Foles took over when Wentz went down with a season-ending injury late into the 2017 campaign.
He helped lead the Eagles through the playoffs and into Super Bowl LII where they defeated the New England Patriots 41-33. Foles was named Super Bowl MVP and finished the game completing 28 of 43 pass attempts for 373 yards and three touchdowns with one interception. He also caught a one-yard touchdown pass following a trick play to become the first quarterback to catch a touchdown pass in a Super Bowl.
Foles spent one more season with the Eagles and also played with the Jacksonville Jaguars (2019), Chicago Bears (2020-21) and Indianapolis Colts (2022).
