It was a tough weekend for Miami Marlins outfielder Dane Myers.
Myers revealed Sunday that he broke his ankle after he kicked a clubhouse door in frustration after he was ejected from Saturday’s game against the Cincinnati Reds.
Craig Mish of the Miami Herald reported that the outfielder will likely be out six to eight weeks with the injury.
Myers was booted from Saturday’s game after he argued a checked swing call with home-plate umpire Derek Thomas. The outfielder was called out on strike three but Myers felt like he held up in time. He tried to appeal to the first-base umpire but Thomas stuck to his call.
With his emotions boiling over, Myers then injured his ankle when he headed to the clubhouse and “took a swipe at the door with (his) foot,” he told reporters Sunday.
He won’t require surgery, but will still go on the injured list for a significant period of time.
“However long it’ll be it’s not going to be easy,” Myers said. “I’m a competitor. I want to play. I don’t really look at our record at the time. I want to win every game that we play so when things don’t go well, I take it pretty hard. I don’t want to say I care too much but I care a lot. If things don’t go my way I have to learn how to deal with it the right way.”
The 28-year-old outfielder made his MLB debut last season and has played in just 40 games this season. He has slashed .265/.337/.422 with two home runs in 2024.
It’s another blow to a Marlins team that has had a very disappointing year. Heading into the 2024 All-Star break, the Marlins have a National League-worst record of 33-63.
