Former NFL receiver Jacoby Jones dies at age 40

Jacoby Jones, who played nine seasons in the NFL and won the Super Bowl with the Baltimore Ravens, died Sunday at the age of 40.

The wide receiver and return specialist had 203 receptions for 2,733 yards and 14 touchdowns plus 7,628 return yards and nine return touchdowns during his career.

“We are completely heartbroken to learn about the passing of Jacoby Jones,” the Ravens said in a statement. “Jacoby had the unique ability to connect with everyone he encountered. His charisma, joy and love created a one-of-a-kind presence that could light up any room or brighten any dark day.

“Jacoby will long be remembered not just for his success on the football field, but for the lasting personal connections he made with countless people in the Ravens organization, Baltimore community and every area he called home. We share our deepest condolences with Jacoby’s family as we all begin to process this devastating loss.”

Jones was drafted in the third round, 73rd overall, by the Houston Texans in 2007. He spent five seasons with the Texans until he was released and signed with the Ravens in 2012.

He was named to the Pro Bowl and selected to the first All-Pro team during his first season with the Ravens. Jones also earned a Super Bowl ring that year scoring both a receiving touchdown and return touchdown as the Ravens defeated the San Francisco 49ers 34-31. His 108-yard touchdown set a record for the longest kickoff return in a Super Bowl.

Jones’ catch in the AFC divisional playoff game against the Denver Broncos is also known as the “Mile High Miracle” as he helped the Ravens tie it up late with a 70-yard touchdown.

After three years with Baltimore, Jones split the 2015 season between the San Diego Chargers and the Pittsburgh Steelers.

He signed a one-day contract to retire the Ravens on Sept. 29, 2017.
