After making a number of roster moves on Monday, the Toronto Blue Jays are shuffling some players to the MLB roster.
The team announced Tuesday afternoon that it has selected the contract of infielder Luis De Los Santos from triple-A Buffalo, recalled Yariel Rodriguez and optioned newly acquired starter Jake Bloss.
De Los Santos is one of the longest-tenured players in the Blue Jays organization. The 26-year-old shortstop debuted in pro ball in 2016 and has slowly worked his way through Toronto’s farm system.
This season, with triple-A Buffalo, the six-foot-one right-handed-hitting De Los Santos has slashed .243/.393/.400 with three home runs over 28 games.
He is now on the 40-man roster and will be active for Tuesday’s game.
Rodriguez was optioned to triple-A after starting the first half of Monday’s doubleheader against the Baltimore Orioles.
The Cuban right-hander was pulled after getting just two outs, issuing four walks and hitting a batter before being replaced by Brandon Eisert with the bases loaded.
Rodriguez was making his 11th start of the season but didn’t have the command to compete with the high-powered Baltimore lineup.
He had been excellent his last four times out, posting a 2.01 ERA with 25 strikeouts and eight walks while racking up 22.1 innings over those four starts. But Monday, he set a new career high in walks allowed and tied for the most earned runs he has allowed in a single outing — all before getting three outs.
Bloss, 23, was acquired in Monday’s trade that sent Yusei Kikuchi to the Houston Astros. While the 2023 third-round pick had been on the major-league squad in Houston, he is expected to spend some time in triple-A to begin his Blue Jays career.
The headliner of Toronto’s return, Bloss shot through the Astros system this season, climbing to the big leagues from high-A. In his lone triple-A start, he allowed no runs over four innings and struck out three.
Sportsnet’s Shi Davidi reported earlier Tuesday that Joey Loperfido, another part of the return from Houston, is scheduled to join the Blue Jays in Baltimore this afternoon. However, it’s unclear if he will make it in time to be active for the game.
