Celtics Star Accused of Riling Up Crowd Against ‘Traitor’ Kyrie Irving; Mavs Guard Promises Payback After Game 1 Finger Incident

Even though the Boston Celtics were devoid of their greatest weapon, they managed to squash the Dallas Mavericks in Game 2. Holding a firm lead in the series, a lot of attention is being drawn toward the struggles of Kyrie Irving. Returning to TD Garden, the same place he left to join Kevin Durant, the crowd was bound to be hostile. It disturbed the rhythm and concentration of KAI, who is only averaging 14 points in the series thus far. But as much as they despise the enigmatic star, the audience tried to catch a breath from their attacks on him when he was at the free throw line. During this time, a Celtics player encouraged the crowd to continue their slander on Irving.

Speaking to Bill Simmons on his podcast, Ryen Russillo recalled Boston’s veteran center Al Horford encouraging the TD Garden fans to continue their hostility toward Irving. “I don’t know if it is true but I kind of want it to be true. There was a big ‘Kyrie sucks’ chant going on with Kyrie lining up on the free-throw line outside of Horford” Russillo noted on the Bill Simmons podcast. “He [Irving] can’t help himself like he gives these state of the Kyrie addresses constantly and they’re f*****g so boring. And Horford, you’re right after the first free throw the chant died down a little but then Horford kind of was like no let’s keep these going”. 

Simmons, who was present at the game saw Horford do the same when Daniel Gafford was shooting free throws. As cheap or unethical as it might seem, the postseason is meant to be brutal. Horford being a seasoned vet knows the impact a crowds jarring wave can have on any player, even the caliber of Kyrie Irving.

As it transpired, the 2016 NBA champion faltered in the face of the merciless TD Garden crowd. He only scored 16 points behind Luka Doncic’s 32-point triple-double. As a secondary who matched Doncic’s pace in the prior series, Dallas just can’t win without KAI picking up his share of the weight.

Of course, he has to face Jrue Holiday, an All-NBA first-team defender possession after possession. But the NBA world knows just how silky of a scorer Irving is. Making circus shots with incredible difficulty has never seemed to be uncomfortable for Irving. Yet it’s the fans and their voices that often derail him from his own game. Even tonight, Irving engaged with the fans after claiming he regretted his actions in 2022 when he flipped the finger at fans. He was even accused of disguising the sin in Game 1 on multiple occasions.

Then again, it is Kyrie Irving. Counting out a basketball wizard like him is never sensible. As it happened, on his way to exit the building, Irving left fans with a promise. He has set the date for his vengeance if and when the Mavericks return for Game 5.

The pressure is all on Kyrie Irving

The story of the NBA Finals starts and has to end with Kyrie Irving. As fantastic as Luka Doncic has been, the Slovenian is suffering from three injuries. Even then, he is wading through and putting on imperious performances over and over again. Irving hasn’t been able to support his adored teammate in the same manner he has previously.

Right before the Celtics series, Irving found a way to carve up the best defense in the league completely dismantling the Minnesota Timberolves with his innate dexterity. He even scored 36 in the closeout Game 5 on the road. So far against the Celtics, he is yet to eclipse 20.

The remarks of the crowd along with tenacious defense from both Jrue Holiday and Jaylen Brown have rendered Irving effectiveness so far. He is shooting below 40% as opposed to his 49% in the conference finals. Luckily, Irving and the Mavs will be well-received in the next two games. A packed American Airlines Center will embrace KAI with compassion. Maybe that’s what he needs. A little love after suffering the brutal Boston experience.

Dallas will count on a Kyrie Irving bounceback. He has done it before, and he sure possesses the mentality and fortitude to fight his demons.
