Shazam! Fury of the Gods has failed to impress both critics and at the box office despite some promising first looks. Despite being certified rotten, Shazam! star Zachary Levi defends the film, calling it an objectively better product than its predecessor.
The Shazam! sequel has struggled at the box office ever since its opening weekend, with its current total being just under $120 million, which barely covers its rumored budget of around $100 million. While audiences have seemed to enjoy Fury of the Gods for what it was, critics and hardcore fans have lambasted the film from every angle. In response to criticism about the film, Levi gave his thoughts on the film’s quality:
“I think ‘Shazam! Fury of the Gods’ is objectively actually a better movie than the first film,’ he joked at the Chicago Comic and Entertainment Expo “A lot of people don’t think so. F— those guys,”
As confident as he is in the product, however, Levi doesn’t seem too positive about the prospect of another sequel. He points out that businesses don’t often invest in something that doesn’t give them money:
“A business is a business,” Levi said “So, they don’t tend to make more products of something that didn’t make them the money that they wanted, right? I would love to keep playing this role. I am literally paid to be an immature version of myself. I would highly recommend. But, I don’t know. And I haven’t had any conversations about it. So, I’m just kind of here, living life!”
This isn’t the first time Zachary Levi has come out to defend the film either. He’s previously called out what he viewed as a toxic response from fans about most of the recent DC Universe films, along with revealing some behind-the-scenes issues regarding a potential JSA cameo in the film. While it’s unclear if Levi will be able to reprise his role as Earth’s Champion in the future, it’s clear he has a passion for the role that will never fade from the hearts of fans.

The official Shazam! Fury of the Gods synopsis reads as follows: “Bestowed with the powers of the gods, Billy Batson and his fellow foster kids are still learning how to juggle teenage life with having adult Super Hero alter-egos. But when the Daughters of Atlas, a vengeful trio of ancient gods, arrive on Earth in search of the magic stolen from them long ago, Billy—aka Shazam—and his family are thrust into a battle for their superpowers, their lives, and the fate of their world.”
