KYIV, Ukraine — President Biden made an unannounced visit to Kyiv on Monday, in a display of strong American support for Ukraine just four days before the anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion.
Air raid sirens blared overhead as Biden was spotted outside St. Michael Golden-Domed Monastery with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Rumors of a possible high-level visitor had swirled around the Ukrainian capital all morning, as authorities shut streets and tightened security without providing a reason. Biden was set to travel to Poland this week to discuss Western efforts to help Ukraine resist Russia’s invasion, as pressure builds on his administration to provide Kyiv with F-16 fighter jets. He was due to depart Washington Monday evening for Warsaw.
