After Matt Turner, Gio Reyna Defends Gregg Berhalter Amid Calls for His Sacking Following Copa America Group Stage Elimination

This defeat marks both the conclusion of Team USA’s Copa America campaign and a potential turning point for Head Coach Gregg Berhalter’s tenure. Many believe it is time for his departure, but some players, including star player Gio Reyna, do not agree with this sentiment.

Players like Matt Turner have also expressed their support for Berhalter’s leadership, following the team’s disappointing exit from the group stage of the Copa America. Now, Gio Reyna has joined in defending Berhalter against calls for his removal.

Gio Reyna believes not Gregg Berhalter but the players at fault

Following the defeat of USMNT against Uruguay, Gio Reyna took a moment to contemplate the disappointing outcome of the tournament. During an interview, Reyna expressed his thoughts on where the true responsibility lies for USMNT’s inability to progress beyond the group stage. “I don’t think this tournament really had anything to do with the staff or the tactics or the way we play,” Reyna stated.

He went on to add, “I think it was more individual mistakes. The staff can only do so much”. Acknowledging the lackluster performance, Gio Reyna took ownership by stating, “At the end of the day, the players didn’t do enough to go through.” 

It is evident that Reyna does not see any issues with Berhalter’s leadership. While Berhalter undeniably has the support of his players, the future of his role as the head of USMNT remains uncertain.
