James Gunn Officially Confirms Superman: Legacy Production Start Date

DC Studios co-head James Gunn has publicly announced the filming commencement date for the much-anticipated Superman: Legacy. The revelation came during an engaging interaction with Wired, where Gunn also shed light on his ongoing projects.

Renowned for his contribution to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the world of DC, James Gunn is gearing up for another exciting venture. In the interview with Wired, Gunn revealed that Superman: Legacy is scheduled to hit the floors in January 2024, confirming our recent report about the production start date of the Superman reboot. Gunn’s confirmation puts to rest the swirling speculations about the production schedule of the project.

As a multifaceted creative force in the industry, James Gunn plays a significant role in shaping the stories and the creative elements of the new DC Universe. In the discussion, Gunn also shared insights about his professional obligations at DC, comparing them to the responsibilities shouldered by Marvel’s Kevin Feige.

“Peter Safran does a lot of what Kevin Feige does. A lot of what I do is I just work on the creative side of things,” the writer and director told the publication. “Mapping out the stories and the creative side of the universe is my job, much more so than some of the more administrative-executive type of stuff. Kevin has to do both.”

In addition to Superman: Legacy, James Gunn is currently doing the press rounds for Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, making him one of the busiest filmmakers in Hollywood. Despite his busy schedule, however, Gunn has expressed his excitement for both projects, stating that he feels privileged to be working on such beloved characters.

DC Studios is casting a new Kal-El for Superman: Legacy, as the DC Universe movie explores the early years of the Last Son of Krypton, around the time he first stats working at the Daily Planet in Metropolis. As such, Henry Cavill is not returning as the DC Comics hero.

Superman’s DC Universe Future

Superman: Legacy is a much-anticipated project, given that Clark Kent has been an integral part of the DC Universe for over 80 years, with various iterations and adaptations across different media. The movie promises to explore the character’s origins and his struggles to balance his dual identities as Clark and Superman while fighting off villains and saving the world. The choice to focus on the early years of his career is a bold move that could potentially breathe new life into the character and appeal to a younger generation of fans.

James Gunn and Peter Safran told journalists that their vision for the DC Universe includes locked scripts, wiggle room and a unified storyline across film, television, animation and video game projects. The two explained that the DC Universe could bring back elements from previous DC regimes, meaning that their eight-to-year plan is not a full reboot.
