Ian Chappell, the ex-captain of the Australian cricket team, expressed his disappointment over the performance of the visiting team’s batters during the third day of the second Test against India in Delhi on Sunday.
According to Chappell, although Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne had applied pressure on India by adopting a counter-attacking strategy in the final session of Day 2, the Australian team missed opportunities on the third day by excessively relying on the sweep shot.

Despite having a crucial lead of 62 runs at the beginning of Day 3, Australia could not take advantage of the situation, as the Indian spinners wreaked havoc. The team led by Pat Cummins lost all their nine wickets in just one session, managing to score only 113 runs, thus setting a moderate target of 115 runs for India.

According to Chappell’s opinion, the Australian team should have exercised some caution instead of recklessly attacking the Indian spinners.
“Australia’s batting this morning was very, very disappointing, especially after last night, with the scores being virtually equal. I thought that they batted very bravely in the evening. They attacked the Indian spinners and had them a little rattled,” Chappel told ESPNcricinfo.
“They were struggling with the field placing and couldn’t contain the batters. You’ve got to be aggressive, but thoughtful in India. I was hoping we’d see more of that. But what we saw were disgraceful attempts to sweep, missing the ball by a long way, and getting the stumps hit. It was a pitiful batting performance today.”
Left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja took control of the game by achieving his personal best Test figures of 7-42. With six wickets remaining, the home team successfully chased down the target, thus securing a commanding victory.
