Dave Filoni, an integral creative force in the Star Wars universe, has hinted at the prospect of Grand Admiral Thrawn transitioning from the small to the big screen. Filoni is currently involved in the creation of a new Star Wars film, where Thrawn could emerge as a pivotal character.
In a recent interview with Empire (via ComicBookMovie.com), Dave Filoni alluded to the possibility of Grand Admiral Thrawn becoming a significant antagonist in his Star Wars film. When quizzed about whether Thrawn was being pegged as the primary villain for this new era of storytelling, Filoni’s response was suggestive.
“Definitely, in my eyes,” Filoni told Empire. According to the creative, Thrawn’s uniqueness lies in his divergence from the prototypical Star Wars villain. “He wasn’t another helmet-wearing, lightsaber-wielding bad guy,” Filoni said, suggesting that Thrawn’s character breaks away from the normative Vader-esque mould. “There’s a lot of pull to make characters that are like Vader, because it is so iconic.”
Dave Filoni further emphasized Thrawn’s significance in the current canon, where he was reintroduced in the animated series Star Wars Rebels. He expressed his gratitude for having Lars Mikkelsen bring Thrawn to life, stating: “He’s a critical player in this time period. We’re fortunate to have that character, and fortunate to have Lars playing him.”
Simultaneously, Dave Filoni showed immense respect for Timothy Zahn’s original vision for Thrawn. He expressed his intent to uphold Zahn’s ideas while charting the character’s journey in his projects. “I want to make sure that I’m honouring ideas that Tim had, so I want to see what’s [in his books] for the story,” Filoni stated.
Prepare to see Thrawn in the Ahsoka Tano series
An alien military strategist and tactician from the planet Csilla, Thrawn was first introduced in Timothy Zahn’s 1991 novel Heir to the Empire. He is set to make his live-action debut in the Ahsoka Tano series starring Rosario Dawson.
