The Boston Celtics entered the offseason with one big priority in mind.
They needed to make a decision about Jaylen Brown’s future, as he’s eligible to sign a supermax contract extension worth almost $300 million.
There haven’t been many updates regarding that situation, and while Brad Stevens didn’t shed a lot of light on it, he did acknowledge that there have been positive talks between both parties and that they want Brown to be with the team for the long run.
“I can’t really talk about it but it’s been all good discussion,” Stevens said, per MassLive. “We want Jaylen to be here for a long, long time, and we’ve made that clear. We’re looking forward to all sitting down and we have time here. I probably shouldn’t say anything else, but I feel optimistic.”
The Celtics and Jaylen Brown have yet to agree to any extension this offseason.

Then again, it’s worth noting that even though Brown is eligible to sign an extension for $295 million, that doesn’t necessarily mean he has to get all that.
The Celtics could look to try and get him to take a pay cut so they can continue to add more pieces around him and Jayson Tatum for years to come.
However, that may not sit well with Brown, especially considering he was tangled up in multiple trade rumors over the course of the years, and some even rumored he could request a trade away from the team this offseason.
Also, they’re not likely to take the same approach with Tatum next season, as he’ll also be eligible to sign an extension worth close to $300 million, and that could cause grudges and some discomfort within the locker room.
They could also sign him and then look to trade him if things don’t work out or they’re able to enter the race for a star that becomes available.
For now, all we can do is wait to find out what’s going to happen.
