Gurriel was dealing with left wrist soreness and available off the bench but did not play as the Blue Jays took the series opener 4-0 at PNC Park Friday night.

The native of Sancti Spiritus, Cuba, is slashing .290/.341/.397 with five home runs and 51 RBI this season.

Raimel Tapia will start in centre field in place of George Springer, who will be Toronto’s designated hitter. Springer went 0 for 5 from the plate in Friday’s win.

Right-hander Trevor Richards will take the mound for the Blue Jays while the Pirates will send righty Johan Ovideo.
