Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles defended his decision to not go for two with a chance to win the game late in regulation against the Kansas City Chiefs Monday night.
Trailing 24-17, Baker Mayfield and the Buccaneers marched down the field in the final minute, with Mayfield eventually connecting with Ryan Miller for a touchdown with 27 seconds left. Bowles elected to kick the extra point to tie the game at 24-24 instead of going for two and the win, and the move backfired as the Bucs’ offence never got back on the field.

The Chiefs won the coin toss to start overtime and sealed the win with a red zone touchdown run from Kareem Hunt, improving to 8-0.
After the game, Bowles was asked if he had given any thought to going for the win in regulation.
“Very minor,” he responded. “We wanted to get it to overtime. With the wet conditions on the field, we felt like we had to go into overtime instead of going for two. We had our shots and we lost the game.”

Bowles was then asked if the decision was strictly his or if other coaches and analysts contributed to it and he stood by the move again.
“No we went for one,” he said. “We took our shots, we had our chances all game. We just lost the game, it didn’t come down to that.”
The Bucs have now lost four of their last five games and dropped to 4-5 on the season. They travel to San Francisco next week for a critical game between two teams competing for NFC playoff spots.
Reporters also asked Chiefs head coach Andy Reid if he knew why Bowles didn’t go for two at the end of regulation.
“No,” Reid said. “But I’m glad he didn’t.”
