“Rest in Peace”: Wrestling Community Weeps Over Georgia’s World Champion Nugzari Tsurtsumia’s Untimely Death at 27

Over the past months, every athlete in every corner of the world has been toiling hard, with the 2024 Olympics being the ultimate goal. Similarly, wrestling stars in every nation have made use of every opportunity on their way to make sure they can bring honor and glory to their respective countries. However, for former world champion Nugzari Tsurtsumia, the journey came to an abrupt halt before he got the chance to show his mettle on the grand stage.

As the world gears up for an enticing showdown in Paris in a month’s time, some stars continue to take their leave in the middle of the road. The USA’s wrestling team remains a dominant force on the Olympics stage and is expected to assert its legacy once again at the French capital. However, even they wouldn’t probably want to win by forfeit, with their opponents failing to show up.

The curtains drop unexpectedly for Nugzari Tsurtsumia and leaves behind a lacuna

The official page of the Georgian Wrestling Federation confirmed the death of the Greco-Roman wrestler on Wednesday, reports Ajara TV. While the cause of his death is yet to come to light, this will be a serious blow to the European nation’s hopes of hauling gold in Paris. Tsurtsumia was found dead in his hometown of Khobi by his relatives.

The 27-year-old last participated in the Polyak Imre and Varga Janos Memorial in Budapest, Hungary last year, where he won bronze in the 55kg weight class. Nugzari first gained widespread attention when he finished 10th at the Cadet Worlds in 2013, and since went on to become one of the most prominent faces in the global wrestling community. Winning the 2019 World Championships gold medal was the height of his career, and riding on last year’s success, he was expected to make the American Greco-Roman wrestlers’ hope of winning gold in Paris a tricky affair.

A few weeks ago, the IOC banned several Russian and Belarussian wrestlers from participating in the upcoming Games. With that in mind, the fans were looking forward to stars from other countries to make up for that. Naturally, they’re heartbroken.

The community comes together in mourning

“He was a very talented wrestler and multiple-time European and World medallist…Rest in peace, Champion,” wrote Andrew in his post on X as he seems to be saddened about missing out on seeing one of the most formidable wrestlers in the world to be unable to show up in Paris to lock horns with the USA’s Dalton Roberts.

Another fan also expressed their grief as they shared Andrew’s post. “Rest in peace,” reads the caption of the fan’s post and is accompanied by a small clip of Nugzari’s glee after dominating the U23 World Championships.

“Keep him in your prayers guys,” writes Kartveli, hoping that the wrestler’s memory will be paid the respect it deserves after giving his everything to make Georgia a respectable country in the world’s wrestling circuit.
