Blue Jays reinstate Daulton Varsho from IL, tab Shane Bieber to start Monday

Outfielder Daulton Varsho and reliever Lazaro Estrada have been reinstated from the injured list and will both be active for Saturday’s game against the Chicago Cubs, the team announced ahead of the showdown (Sportsnet, 2:20 p.m. ET / 11:20 a.m. PT).

In a corresponding move, infielder Charles McAdoo and lefty reliever Brendon Little have been optioned to triple-A Buffalo.

Varsho has been on the IL since June 10 with left wrist inflammation, but resumed hitting this week.

On the season, the 29-year-old holds a .738 OPS with five home runs in 64 games.

Estrada, meanwhile, hit the IL with a shoulder impingement back in April after making only one appearance for the Blue Jays, pitching four innings out of the bullpen in a 6-3 loss to the Chicago White Sox. He held the White Sox off the board and struck out three.

News of Bieber’s return comes at a great time for the Jays, as they’ve used his spot in the rotation as a bullpen day for much of the season.

A mid-season acquisition by the Blue Jays last summer, Bieber managed only seven regular-season starts with Toronto as he recovered from a Tommy John surgery he underwent the season prior while with the Cleveland Guardians. He finished with a 3.57 ERA and 1.017 WHIP in 40.1 innings.

Little, after being optioned down to triple-A back in April following a rough start to the season, managed only one more appearance in his return to the majors, giving up four runs in one inning during the Blue Jays’ 16-2 loss to the Chicago Cubs on Friday.

McAdoo, in his cup of coffee in the majors, batted .160 with one home run in eight games.

The Blue Jays are 37-39 and sit 10 games back of the New York Yankees in the AL East.
