It appears Brendan Sorsby won’t be playing for Texas Tech after all.
Amidst an ongoing legal battle over his NCAA eligibility, the quarterback is now applying for the NFL’s supplemental draft, according to multiple reports on Monday.
Last week, a Texas judge granted Sorsby a temporary injunction that clears the way for him to play this fall for Texas Tech despite being declared ineligible by the NCAA for wagering on college sports, including bets made on his own team while he was at Indiana.
Court records show that Sorsby has acknowledged making thousands of impermissible bets totalling at least $90,000 during his time at Indiana, Cincinnati and Texas Tech. That included 40 bets on Indiana while he was a freshman there in 2022, though none on any of the games he played in with the Hoosiers.
Now, Sorsby will turn his attention to an unusual route of entering the NFL.
The supplemental draft is an alternate summer draft where NFL teams can bid future draft picks on players who had a sudden change to their NCAA eligibility and did not enter the main draft.
Notable players to be selected via a supplemental draft include Josh Gordon, Terrelle Pryor, Cris Carter and Bernie Kosar. The last player to be selected in one was when the Arizona Cardinals took safety Jalen Thompson in 2019.
Many believed Sorsby could have been a first-round selection if he had entered the main draft in April. The 22-year-old QB threw for 2,800 yards and 27 touchdowns with Cincinnati last season.
