Patrick Mahomes has become the highest-paid player in the NFL once again.
The Kansas City Chiefs added two more years to Mahomes’ existing contract on Wednesday, the team announced.
The new money on Mahomes’ deal is worth $239.05 million, bringing the total value of his contract to $504.75 million — the first deal in NFL history to be valued at over $500 million, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported. The entire $504.75 million is fully guaranteed through contract mechanisms, Schefter added.
His new yearly average of $64 million is also a league record.
The contract will keep Mahomes with the Chiefs through the 2033 season.
With a new deal on the books, the Chiefs and Mahomes will turn their focus to a bounce-back season in 2026. Whether Mahomes is ready to start the season in Week 1 remains up in the air.
Mahomes tore the ACL and LCL in his left knee on Dec. 14 in the waning minutes of a loss to the Los Angeles Chargers, one that effectively eliminated the Chiefs from playoff contention.
The three-time Super Bowl champion is still targeting Week 1 for his return to the field, and Mahomes has taken an important step in his recovery from the torn ligaments by participating in voluntary workouts last week.
“It’s kind of, ‘We’ll see,’” Mahomes said last week. “You have these week-to-two week checkpoints that I have to get to. The biggest thing for me now is to get to the running and cutting. … Until I’m able to protect myself and get out there, they’re going to keep me safe. But if I can continue to do things the right way, that’s the hope for me at least.”
