Rangers beat Sagueneens, advance to Memorial Cup final

KELOWNA, B.C. — Jack Pridham and Sam O’Reilly each had a goal and an assist, Christian Kirsch made 26 saves, and the Kitchener Rangers defeated the Chicoutimi Sagueneens 3-2 at the Memorial Cup tournament on Tuesday.

Luca Romano also scored for the Rangers, who improved to 3-0 at Prospera Place with earlier wins over the Kelowna Rockets and Everett Silvertips. Dylan Edwards chipped in with two assists for the unbeaten Ontario Hockey League champions, who advance straight to Sunday’s final.

The OHL has won the last two Memorial Cups — the Saginaw Spirit in 2024, and the London Knights in 2025.

Emile Ricard and Mavrick Lachance scored for the Sagueneens, who slipped to 1-2.

The teams were scoreless after 20 minutes, and the Rangers took a 2-1 lead into the third.

The Sagueneens outshot the Rangers 28-18, including 13-3 in the third period. Both teams went 0-for-2 on the power play.

The Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League champion Sagueneens, who lost to the Silvertips and then beat the host Rockets in overtime earlier in the four-team tourney, will be watching Wednesday’s all-Western Hockey League showdown between the Silvertips (1-1) and Rockets (0-2). An Everett victory will ensure the Sagueneens advance to the playoff round.

The Rockets, winless after two games, play the WHL champion Everett Silvertips on Wednesday in the final round robin game. The Silvertips eliminated the Rockets on April 17 in the second round of the WHL playoffs, winning the best-of-seven series in five games, but the final two contests were decided in overtime.
